Overview
The A6210 monitor operates in 3 distinct modes: thrust position, differential expansion, or rod position. Its Thrust Position mode accurately monitors thrust position and reliably provides machinery protection by comparing the measured axial shaft position against alarm setpoints – driving alarms and relay outputs; shaft thrust monitoring is one of the most critical measurements on turbomachinery, as sudden and small axial movements should be detected in 40 msec or less to minimize or avoid rotor to case contact, with redundant sensors and voting logic recommended, and thrust bearing temperature measurement highly advised as a complement. This monitoring involves one to three displacement sensors mounted axially parallel to the shaft (measuring the shaft or thrust collar), using a non-contact sensor at the shaft-end position; for extremely critical safety applications, the A6250 monitor offers triple-redundant thrust protection built to API 670 overspeed protection platforms. Beyond thrust position monitoring, the A6210 can be configured for differential expansion measurements: as turbomachinery and rotors expand at different rates due to thermal changes during turbine startup, the differential expansion sensor is mounted such that shaft growth aligns with the case (with the target on the shaft), and if case and shaft grow at a similar rate, the measurement stays near zero, with support for tandem (complementary or co- linear) ramp modes. Additionally, the monitor can be set for average rod drop mode, used to track rod position wear in reciprocating compressors – over time, rider bands on horizontally orientated pistons wear, and if wear exceeds specs, the piston may contact the cylinder wall causing damage; by mounting at least one displacement probe to measure piston rod position, users receive notifications of piston drop (indicating rider band wear), can set automatic shaft position protection trips, and the average rod drop parameter can reflect actual rider band wear or (with no factor applied) the piston rod’s movement. Complementing these operational capabilities, the AMS 6500 integrates easily with DeltaV and Ovation process automation systems, including preconfigured DeltaV Graphic Diagrams and Ovation Graphic Macros to accelerate operator graphic development, while its software provides maintenance personnel with advanced predictive and performance diagnostic tools to confidently and accurately identify machine malfunctions early. |
