Products details
Communication (COM) modules serve as the critical connectivity backbone of Honeywell FSC (Fail-Safe Control) systems, enabling seamless data transmission and coordination across multiple layers of industrial control architectures. Their core functionality encompasses four primary, mission-critical communication scenarios:
Redundant Central Part Synchronization: Facilitating high-speed, real-time data exchange between redundant Central Processing Units (CPUs) in a dual-redundant FSC configuration. This includes the transmission of operational status, control logic execution data, and fault diagnostics to ensure perfect synchronization between the active and standby Central Parts. In the event of a primary unit failure, this communication enables rapid, lossless failover—preserving system continuity and avoiding process disruptions in safety-critical applications.
Master-Slave FSC System Coordination: Enabling hierarchical communication between a master FSC system (responsible for overarching control logic and system-wide oversight) and distributed slave FSC systems (deployed for localized control of specific process units or equipment). This includes the transfer of command signals, setpoint adjustments, and process data aggregation, supporting scalable, modular FSC system deployments in large-scale industrial facilities (e.g., refineries, chemical plants, or power generation complexes).
Cross-System Integration with External Control & Peripheral Devices: Facilitating bidirectional communication with third-party integrated control systems (such as Distributed Control Systems, DCS; Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems, SCADA; or Manufacturing Execution Systems, MES) to enable unified process monitoring and control. Additionally, the module supports connectivity with peripheral devices including printers (for hardcopy documentation of system logs, alarm records, and configuration reports) and data loggers—ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for process data retention and audit trails.
User Station Interaction: Enabling secure, real-time communication between the FSC system and dedicated user stations (HMI terminals or engineering workstations). This supports critical user-driven operations such as system configuration, control logic programming, real-time status monitoring, alarm acknowledgment, and diagnostic troubleshooting—empowering operators and engineers to manage the FSC system efficiently while maintaining safety protocols.
To accommodate the diverse connectivity needs of industrial environments, the COM module offers versatile serial communication link support across multiple industry-standard protocols and physical layers. This includes RS422 (for long-distance, multi-drop communication with high noise immunity), RS232C (for short-range, point-to-point connections with peripheral devices), RS485 (for cost-effective, half-duplex multi-node networks), current loop (for legacy system compatibility and reliable signal transmission in harsh electrical environments), and glass fiber (for ultra-high-speed, EMI/RFI-immune communication over extended distances, ideal for hazardous or electrically noisy industrial settings). Each communication interface is designed to meet strict industrial reliability standards, ensuring stable data transmission even in extreme temperature, humidity, or electromagnetic interference conditions.

Hardware & Interface Details
Module Composition: Designed to work with compatible interface modules (e.g., 10004/B/1 RS232C, 10004/E/1 Current loop, 10004/G/1 Glass fiber) via top and bottom interface slots. The type coding follows the format "10004/./.", where letters indicate interface types (e.g., 10004/H/F combines 10004/H/1 and 10004/F/1 interfaces), and empty slots are marked with "1".
Physical Specifications: Occupies 8 TE (8 HP) rack space and 3 HE (3U) height when equipped with interfaces. Features EPROM sockets for program storage, supporting EPROM types such as 27C512 (512 Kb), 27C1001 (1 Mb), and 27C2001 (2 Mb) with a maximum access time of 200 ns.
Installation Caution: Must not be removed or replaced while the Central Part power is active, as this may cause system malfunctions or hardware damage.
