Communication Interface (T8151B) Technical Overview

1. Module Function & Role

The Communication Interface (T8151B) serves as a critical communication hub for the controller, minimizing communication load on the TMR processor. It enables connectivity with:

• Other Trusted systems.

• Engineering workstations.

• Third-party equipment.

2. Hardware Design & Physical Features

• Form Factor & Installation: The module fits into any single-width slot of a controller or expander

  chassis. Only modules installed in the controller chassis support peer-to-peer communication.

• Ports & Connectivity:

• Dual Ethernet ports and four serial ports, accessible from the rear via the T8153 communications

  interface adapter.

• A diagnostic port, accessible from the front faceplate (see Figure 5-10: Communication Interface

  Module for physical reference).

• Power Supply: Powered by dual redundant +24V dc from the chassis backplane, ensuring

  uninterrupted operation.

3. Communication Protocols & Connectivity

The module supports multiple communication standards and connection capacities:

• Modbus (RTU) over Ethernet TCP/IP: Up to ten connections via the Ethernet TCP/IP stack, each

  requiring a unique IP port number (default port: 2000).

• Toolset Programming: One connection to the programming toolset, using a fixed IP port number

  (6000).

• Modicon Open Modbus TCP: Up to ten connections on port 502.

4. Status LEDs & Indications

The module features tri-colored LEDs that provide detailed status and activity feedback, as defined in Table 

5-3: Communications Interface Module LED Indications:

• Healthy:

• Steady green = Module is healthy.

• Flashing red = Module has failed.

• Active: Steady green when the module is in Active mode (application running, communications

  enabled).

• Standby: Steady green when the module is in Standby mode (application stopped, communications

  disabled).

• Educated: Steady green indicates a successful configuration load from the Processor.

• Communications: Six tri-colored LEDs indicate data transfer activity across all serial and both

  Ethernet ports:

• Flash red = Transmitting data.

• Flash green = Receiving data.

• Flash amber = Transmitting and receiving simultaneously.

• Green LED off = Good connection.

• Green LED on = No connection or bad connection.

5. User-Configurable Flexibility

• Media Support: The module is user-configurable and can support multiple communication media,

  adapting to diverse industrial networking requirements.

• Diagnostic Capability: The front-facing diagnostic port allows for troubleshooting and configuration,

  enhancing maintainability.

6. Chassis-Specific Behavior

• When installed in a controller chassis, the module enables peer-to-peer communication functionality.

• In an expander chassis, it provides communication services without peer-to-peer support, focusing on

  I/O and peripheral connectivity.
