1. Module Role & System Connectivity
The Expander Interface Adapter (T8312) serves as a physical bridge, establishing connections between
expander interface modules in the controller chassis and processor interface modules in expander chassis. It
enables scalable expansion of the control system by linking multiple chassis into a unified architecture.
2. Model Variants & Capacity
Two adapter models are available, each supporting different numbers of expander chassis:
T8312/4: Connects up to four expander chassis.
T8312/7 (shown in Figure 5-7): Connects up to seven expander chassis, enabling broader system
expansion.
3. Physical Design & Interfaces
Mechanical Construction: The adapter features a robust metallic enclosure (visible in Figure 5-7 Expander
Interface Adapter, Figure 5-8 Expander Interface Adapter (Front View), and Figure 5-9 Expander Interface
Adapter (Rear View)) to withstand industrial environments.
Connector Layout: The rear view (Figure 5-9) displays multiple dedicated connectors, each corresponding
to an expander chassis, ensuring organized and reliable physical connections.
4. Chassis Identification & Configuration
To manage multiple connected expander chassis, follow this configuration logic:
Dip Switch IDs: When the controller chassis dip switches are set to ID #1, the first seven expander chassis
use dip switch IDs 2 to 8. For additional chassis (up to 15 in total, designated 9 to 15 in software), a
second interface adapter is used, with their dip switches also set to 2 to 8 (mapped to 9–15 in the software
configuration .ini file, as detailed in Section 8).
Software Mapping: This dip switch and software mapping system ensures each expander chassis is
uniquely identified, preventing communication conflicts and enabling precise system management.
5. Role in System Scalability
By supporting up to seven expander chassis (via T8312/7), the adapter enables the control system to scale
horizontally. This scalability is critical for large industrial applications, where distributed I/O and \
processing across multiple chassis improve performance, fault isolation, and maintenance accessibility.
