Product description
The Foxboro FBM202 is a specialized thermocouple/mV analog input module belonging to
Foxboro’s I/A Series (integrated into the Foxboro Evo™ Process Automation System), designed to
accurately acquire temperature and millivolt signals from industrial field sensors. It features eight
independent thermocouple/mV input channels and one dedicated RTD reference junction
compensation channel, serving as a critical interface between field temperature measurement devices
and distributed control systems (DCS) in process industries.
Key Design & Functional Highlights
Dual Signal Compatibility: Supports eight isolated thermocouple/mV input channels (–10.5 to +69.5
mV DC) compatible with standard thermocouple types (B, E, J, K, N, R, S, T) and millivolt-level signals.
The integrated 4-wire 100 Ω platinum RTD (IEC 751, Class B) provides reference junction temperature
compensation, ensuring accurate temperature measurement by offsetting terminal temperature
variations.
High Precision & Noise Suppression: Employs per-channel sigma-delta analog-to-digital (A/D)
conversion, delivering ±0.03% of span accuracy (±27 µV for mV inputs) at 25°C, with a temperature
coefficient of ±50 ppm/°C. Configurable integration periods filter process and power-line noise, while
10 MΩ differential input impedance minimizes signal loading.
Comprehensive Isolation & Protection: Each input channel is galvanically isolated from other channels
and ground (600 V AC withstand for 1 minute), preventing cross-talk and protecting against voltage
transients. Thermocouple burnout detection (full upscale output) provides fault awareness for open-
circuit sensors, enhancing process safety.
Rugged & Compact Form: Housed in a durable extruded aluminum enclosure, the module is rated for
Class G3 (harsh) environments per ISA S71.04, operating reliably in temperatures from -20°C to +70°C
and 5–95% non-condensing humidity. Its compact dimensions (102 mm height × 45 mm width × 104
mm depth) enable dense mounting in control cabinets.
Flexible Installation & Maintenance: Mounts on I/A Series modular baseplates (DIN rail or 19-inch
rack-compatible) and supports two termination assembly (TA) types: DIN rail-mounted TAs (PVC/PA
material) or baseplate-mounted TAs (PC/ABS material) for paired FBM202 modules. Hot-swappable
design allows module removal/replacement without disconnecting field, power, or communication
cables, minimizing downtime.
Redundant Communication: Integrates with the I/A Series’ redundant 2 Mbps fieldbus, automatically
switching to the active path (A or B) if one path fails, ensuring uninterrupted data transmission to
Control Processors (FCP) or Fieldbus Communication Modules (FCM).
